Pluto is a planet no longer after a group of astronomers voted to strip it of its planet status. The move came today at the meeting of the International Astronomic Union. Pluto got demoted to "dwarf planet" status along with another former planet called 'Ceres' and the recently discovered 2003 UB-313.
"This is about definitions of planets as we observe them today," Richard Binzell of the International Astronomic Union said.
Pluto's planetary status has been tenuous ever since its discovery in 1930, due to its small size, icy composition and odd orbit.
Six years ago New York's Hayden Planetarium caused a cosmic controversy by leaving Pluto out of its solar system lineup.
